"The Immigrant" for daily hire & charter.
Salmon Fishing
There are many salmon rivers loughs in the Western Fisheries Region. Some of the better salmon waters in Galway include the Galway Salmon Weir Fishery and the Delphi Fishery, which are better fished from April to July. The Kylemore Lakes are well known salmon waters and fish well from June onwards.
Costs
On privately owned waters, the cost of a day's salmon fishing ranges between £10 and £35, more if a boatman is required. A 21-day State salmon licence costs £10, and an annual licence is £25 which allows access to all districts. Also available is a day licence for
£3.
Trout Fishing
As well as many salmon rivers, there are many large and small wild brown trout waters. Sea trout have been scarce in recent years so it is illegal to kill sea trout in these areas. A licence is not required for brown trout fishing in Ireland.
The Corrib System
The season of Ireland's largest lake, Lough Corrib, opens on February 15th and gives excellent fishing to wet fly from early April. Anglers worldwide know of Lough Corrib and the Mayfly bait that miraculously arises from it. The lake has been designated a "salmonid", meaning that it's to be preserved as a special trout and salmon lake.
The Mayfly period, which spans mid-May to early June, is an outstanding time for wet fly, dappling, and other methods. Dappling is, by far, the most productive method in Mayfly time. Trolling can take salmon and big ferox trout, from April onwards. In certain areas of the Lough, fresh run grilse are caught, onward from the third week of May, but one needs to know the area well to locate them.
Costs
A boatman with a boat and engine can be hired for about £45 per day, while a boat and outboard motor can be hired for the day or week at some angling centres for varied costs. There are boatmen who hold insurance to cover their clients and these boatmen are usually hired by hotels and guesthouses to service their guests.

Coarse Fishing
There is excellent coarse fishing in the Moycullen area of Galway, where brean, roach, hybrids, perch, and pike can be caught in the small lakes there. The fishery board with the help of the local farmers and Coillte provide first-class access parking and fishing stands at the lakes. There are also coarse fishing waters near Tuam, Milltown/Irishtown area, and the lakes around Claremorris, where the fishery board has also provided first-class fishing stands. A licence is not required for coarse fishing.
