The first records of organised race meetings in Galway go back as far as the middle of the 18th century. Sources indicate that on the opening of the Ballybrit race course , that somewhere between 35 an 40 thousand people showed up on the second day of the meeting. The Galway races have gone from strength to strength since those early days. This July/August meeting is one of the largest and most popular meetings in the country.It guarantees the best of Irish racing in the end of July/August period.

Their is also further 3 day meetings in September and October which are immensely popular also.Indeed season race goers all agree that the Galway races is the premier Irish race meeting and second only to the great Cheltenham . Many of the most famous horses, ridden by the Worlds top jockeys have competed here at one time or another and the race meeting is no stranger to Gold cup and Grand National winners.
