Rich in History, laden in panoramic scenery Mayo also offers a huge range of activities such as fishing, golf, horse riding, hill walking, pony trekking, water sports and a host of other activities. So whether you want a relaxing break taking in beautiful stretches of Ireland or a fun filled action packed break or a mixture of both then Mayo is definitely the place for you.

As legend has it in 441 AD St. Patrick (whose feast day is celebrated every year on March 17th by millions of Irish people both at home and abroad) spent 40 days of Lent praying and fasting on top of a mountain overlooking Clew Bay. This was part of his effort to convert Ireland to Christianity. To this day thousands of people; young and old alike, some in their bare feet, make the tough but ultimately rewarding climb to the top of this mountain standing
at 2,510 ft., which is now known as Croagh Patrick. With its magnificent views of Clew Bay and its countless mythical islands and drowned drumlins the climb is stunning.

Situated 6 miles east of Croagh Patrick on the Louisburgh Road, is the town of Westport. Westport, designated as one of Bord Failte’s Heritage Towns, is on the shores of Clew Bay. Its central position on the Coast of Mayo makes it an ideal base for a holiday in the West. Its proximity to a host of leisure activities, which include golf, sea angling, freshwater angling, walking tours, equestrian, sailing and clay pigeon shooting.

To the south east of Westport is the town of Ballinrobe. Ballinrobe is set in what can be referred to as the “Lake District” of Mayo. For its here that you will find Lough Mask, Lough Carra and a few miles away is Lough Corrib. Lough Mask is host to the “World Cup Angling Competition” .These three lakes are among the best brown trout and salmon fisheries in Europe. Ballinrobe also plays host to the only race course in Mayo and the Ballinrobe Golf Club , Clooncastle established since 1895
