Ballinrobe is a very old garrison market town with a population of 1,200/1,300 people. Ballinrobe is the gateway to Connemara an ideal location from which to tour, with its unparalleled scenery of mountains, rivers, lakes and seashores. Knock National Shrine 20 miles a place of pilgrimage and devotion since 1879. Ballinrobe is only 7 miles from Ashford Castle in Cong and Maam where the film "The Quiet Man" was filmed. "The Field" was filmed in Leenane. "Flights of the Doves" parts were filmed in Ballinrobe. Ballintubber Abbey 5 miles Croagh Patrick where St. Patrick rested on his travels through Ireland is a short drive from Westport.
Croagh Patrick - Located 6 miles west of Westport on the Louisburgh Road, one of Mayo's most famous landmarks soaring to a height of 2,510 ft. Overlooking Clew Bay and the western coastline it is renowned for its association with Irelands' patron saint, St. Patrick. Westport House - Westport House and Country Estate (2kms from the town centre) is a fine Georgian Mansion. One of Ireland's premier day-visitor attractions the Westport House Gardens feature a children's zoo with camels, llamas, deer, rheas and monkeys. There are also a range of Sports facilities including par 3 Golf, pitch and putt, boating and tennis.
Golf - The Westport Golf Club on the shores of Clew Bay is a magnificent course and has been the venue for the Irish Close Championship on three occasions. Walking Tours - The Western Way, a marked trail, passes through Westport and the environs also provide the choice of a challenging hike in the hills or an invigorating walk by the seashore.
